Another aspect of the 'mainstream music is bad now' point. It’s been estimated by someone who studied this that in the mid 1960s Birmingham (UK) had more than 250 regular gigging bands - just in that one area. How many bands does it have now? Certainly far less.
And it’s not just a question of the number, but of the age of the people in the bands. Many of those now will be people in their 30s and 40s who are not making new music, but playing an older type of music, for the fun of it, because they love it (which is nice). In the 1960s 90% of the bands were young people, often just 17 or 18 years old making new types of music. And the originality and quality of the music they played was amazing, considering their age
By coincidence my young nephew is presently studying music in Birmingham and is one of those people playing in such young bands in the area. Good luck to folk like him.
