Common Sense
Its an often used phrase and normally to criticise someone for not having it, like they are very stupid. But in a way, there IS no such things as common sense. There is just stuff we have learned and stuff we have not learned yet. And it depends on what country you are in and what time too. What is normal in country A is totally unknown in country B. So a person from country B would not know to DO that thing when they visit country A. Does that make them stupid? They have no common sense? No it just means they have not learned that yet. and it changes in time - what was normal in Britain 100 years ago is now very strange, what is normal now would have been seen as madness or magic 100 years ago.
2. People, especially conservatives and narrow minded folk, often criticise others by saying they have 'no common sense'. Or 'its just common sense politics'... or 'use your common sense!'
What rubbish.
There is no such thing as common sense isolated from culture... its all learned behaviour, informed by underlying presumptions and cultural norms and various philosophical and language concepts that influence all that.
For example, if its common sense to look right when crossing the road in the UK, then why is LOOK RIGHT written on the ground, in big letters? Because its culturally set learned behaviour...not some inborn, obvious knowledge or sense. You have either learned it, experienced it...or you have not, yet... and conservative ideology is no more common sense than socialist ideology is. Nor more realistic. It's just one way of doing and thinking things. Yep!
