Conformism
Anyone who sticks out in some way will encounter people who attack them in some way. normally those people have only two mental tools to attack you wish (oh and a couple of fists too if its gets physical, but lets focus on the mental aspect for now). The two tools are conformism and humour. The conformism of what is normal in that time and place, of what are mostly unexamined assumptions and received wisdom. And they want you step in line with all this. The second is the humour of conformism, the humour of the lowest level, humour which is borne out of that received wisdom and unexamined assumptions. Anyone who starts to realise this - and it’s hard to do so when you are young and suffering under the barrage of these attacks from conformity - starts to see that neither is a good reason to actually change what you do, change what you think or change the way you look, etc.
