Critical thinking skills and practical education
It is possible to combine teaching a student to have better critical thinking skills with studying a 'practical' subject, like say, engineering. The problem is, of course, that this is not done in practice. So called vocational and practical courses are geared towards technical knowledge that does not consider the wider society that the technology happens in or benefits.
But it IS possible that we could have a whole generation of culturally aware, and even politically radical student engineers, scientists, accountants, etc. That's a possibility if we chose to take it.
